She’s a cute 6-year-old. The granddaughter of a close friend. And, she wanted a pair of sparkling blue Frozen shoes. Doesn’t every little girl these days?
Her grandmother, my friend shared this with me. So when I was out shopping recently and saw a pair in her granddaughter’s size, I just HAD to buy them as a surprise for my little friend.
While she was visiting her grandmother a few days ago, I revealed this wonder surprise. Something she just had to have and couldn’t live without a couple of weeks ago. I removed the shoes from the bag with a flourish. TADAH!
With a straight face, this 6-year-old looked me in the eyes and said, “I don’t like them.”
“You don’t like them?” I asked … a little taken aback and confused.
I knew I had understood her grandmother correctly that only a mere few days before this was a MUST-HAVE item.
So I tried again, “I thought you told your grandmother that you really wanted a pair.”
“No. I don’t want them.” She flatly stated.
So there they sit on my dining table awaiting a trip back to their store of purchase. I’m thankful the store has a generous return policy.
I began pondering … How do I act or respond with the gifts that my Heavenly Father has given me?
“Every good gift and every perfect present comes from heaven; it comes down from God, the Creator of the heavenly lights, who does not change or cause darkness by turning.” James 1:17 GNT
With the gifts that God has given me, I’m pretty certain that I’ve never flatly told Him, “No, I don’t want it.” Yet, by not fully using, or sometimes just not using at all, the gifts He has given me seems to be a similar response.
Hmmm … maybe it’s time to take inventory of the gifts He has bestowed on me and then convey my thankfulness clearly … and begin using them daily.
For now, I’m thankful that God doesn’t have a return policy “… for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” Romans 11:29 NIV
