“Look here, Asia” I said to my beloved cat. She looked up and watched me with her big gold eyes. Then I pulled the string and “BANG!” went the popper. She took off like a rocket and hid behind the couch in the living room. After several minutes of apologizing and lovingly coaxing her, Asia finally came out and forgave me.
I had shot off poppers on July 4 outside and didn’t remember the loud bang they made to release the streams of confetti inside. My original intent today was not to frighten my sweet kitty but to give her some streamers to play with. I still remember that trusting look from her just before I pulled the string.
After we both calmed down from this incident, I began thinking of how I would feel if God did that when He wanted to show me something. Sometimes the new thing God is showing me is really big, powerful, or bright. And, sometimes, quite honestly, it scares me.
Thankfully, God shows us most of the time in a different way. Not the BIG BANG that I did with Asia but with a still, small voice.
“Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave.” I Kings 19:11-13 NKJV
God doesn’t have to shout, or send wind, earthquakes, and fire to get our attention … most of the time. He usually speaks gently to our spirit through His Holy Spirit who lives in us.
“God can do anything, you know – far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” Ephesians 3:20 The Message
I will be a lot more gentle to Asia for the rest of the day as I speak loving words to her. I’m thankful God can whisper intimately in my ear when He says, “Look here, my child.”
How has God been speaking to you lately?
