Words Have Power

words-have-powerOur words have power. They can leave an imprint on the hearts of those who hear them. They can shape lives. They can be a blessing or a curse. They can take root and change what we believe about our selves. Yes, words have power.

  1. I used to be very good at reading aloud. I was the kid my teachers would come and get for me to teach the slow readers how to read because I knew phonics. That was until my 5th grade teacher made fun of me while reading. I started stuttering when asked to read aloud. Finally, as an adult, I broke that curse.
  2. I love to sing. One of my sisters (who at the time had years of voice lessons) told me I had a terrible singing voice. I broke that curse years later and learned to sing tenor harmony.
  3. Years ago, a ministry leader started ranting at me with “You will never … in ministry.” To this day, I can’t remember what negative words were spoken because I broke the curse of them as they were being said. And, in the years since, I’ve done a lot in ministry. (The ministry leader … not in ministry anymore.)

Do I believe God has called me to take HIS message around the world and work with people who are HIS communicators! ABSOLUTELY YES! When I was about 4-5 years old, I used to “preach” in the living room. My teacher was amazed at the stories I wrote in First Grade. Do I think the enemy wants to silence me, absolutely yes.

The enemy will use anyone in our lives who is willing to speak words of death … friends, family, coworkers. Sometimes they are not even aware they are being used … until it’s too late.

If you’ve had similar experiences, you, too, can break the power of those words over/in your life. Choose not to believe what was said. Choose not to own what was said. Forgive the person who said it.

We need to be careful with our words, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue,” Proverbs 18:21.
